Rome CNN —An Italian mafia boss who escaped from a maximum security prison last year by using bed sheets to scale the walls has been captured in France, authorities say. Marco Raduano, the 40-year-old boss of the Gargano Mafia in the southern Italian region of Puglia, was caught Thursday outside a luxury restaurant in Bastia, Corsica, where he was dining with a female companion. Also apprehended was his right-hand man, Gianluigi Troiano, who fled house arrest in 2021 after detaching his electronic bracelet. Raduano’s escape by tying bed sheets from his prison window just under a year ago was caught on the penitentiary’s surveillance cameras. The escape lasted 16 seconds and he fled on foot with no guards noticing or giving chase, which led to an internal investigation of the maximum security prison.

CNN —FC Barcelona and several of the soccer club’s current and former executives are officially being investigated as suspects for “the sustained crime of active bribery,” according to a court document obtained by CNN – the latest twist in an alleged improper payment scandal overshadowing Spanish soccer. The investigation relates to alleged improper payments made by Barcelona to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former leading refereeing official in Spain. The spokesperson declined to share more details about the search but said that no arrests are expected to be made. He added that in his opinion the payments “produced the desired effects on referees,” resulting in “consequent systemic corruption in … Spanish refereeing” affecting soccer in the country. CNN has reached out to Negreira via his company for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

London CNN —Four players from Real Madrid’s reserve teams are being investigated by police after a mother alleged videos of a sexual nature involving her 16-year-old daughter were circulated without her consent. Three players were arrested and later released after their mobile phones were seized, according to a statement issued by Spain’s Guardia Civil. The daughter was in a consensual relationship with a player, the statement added. Police sources told CNN that the videos were shared by the players. “When the club has detailed knowledge of the facts, we will take the appropriate measures,” the statement added.

The container ship's last stop before reaching the Spanish archipelago off the African coast was Lome, Togo's capital, said the coastguard spokesperson without elaborating. In a similar case in November last year, the Spanish coastguard rescued three African stowaways who had arrived in the Canary Islands after enduring 11 days on the rudder of a fuel tanker from Nigeria. LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - More than 700 firearms have been seized in a five-year operation by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spain's Guardia Civil to prevent replica guns that can easily be converted into lethal weapons from entering Britain, the NCA said on Sunday. The operation, which also involved international law enforcement and gun retailers, targeted forward-venting blank firearms (FVBF), which resemble guns such as Glocks. The weapons are traded lawfully in some parts of mainland Europe but are illegal to possess or import into Britain. Since 2019, the NCA and Guardia Civil - which has jurisdiction in Spain for the national control of firearms- have been jointly working on Project Vizardlike to combat the threat. The operation has so far resulted in the seizure of 703 firearms, 74 arrests and 50 convictions, the NCA said.

Polițiștii români de frontieră au efectuat 40 de percheziții la sediile mai multor firme și la locuințele unor persoane, implicate în producerea și comercializarea ilegală a țigărilor. Descinderile au avut loc pe raza judeţelor Bihor, Timiş, Galaţi, Constanţa, Iaşi, Bacău, Sibiu, Braşov şi în municipiul Bucureşti. Cazul a pornit de la două anchete declanșate, în perioada 2017-2019, la nivelul Oficiului European de Luptă Anti-Fraudă (OLAF) și documentate în urma cooperării internaţionale, privind o grupare de criminalitate organizată transfrontalieră. Membrii grupării au pus în funcţiune, pe teritoriul mai multor state membre ale UE, fabrici clandestine de producere şi ambalare de ţigarete. Concomitent, vor fi desfăşurate percheziţii pe teritoriul Ungariei şi Italiei, iar la percheziţiile efectuate pe teritoriul României asistă și doi poliţişti din cadrul Guardia Civil din Spania.
